taking the salt plunge!

Postby mrsbest88 » Sun Dec 23, 2012 5:35 am

Hi I'm alishia. I'm from fort smith and have kept fw for about 10 years. Finally decided to plunge into salt feet first. I have a 20 gallon fo setup at the moment. Been set up almost a month. I used nitromax live bacteria to jump start the tank and by advice of my lfs added the menace of the salt world....damsels.... Ugh. BIG mistake..... Fixing to fish them out and trade them in for their cousin the nemo clown lol. Any and all advice is appreciated. Will be upgrading lighting soon hopefully, adding live rock and hopefully in a few months, some corals. So all wisdom will be accepted. Started small cuz I'm sure ill crash and burn at least once and didn't want thousands flushed down the drain. Look forward to hearing from Yall!

Hello Alisha and welcome to the forum!

Those damsels can really be terrors. Hopefully someone can get you hooked up with the lighting you need. In the meantime you should start a build hothead about your tank in the "Members Tank" area. :)

Thank you all for the welcomes. And I agree. Right now I have two dominoes and a blue. Hopefully since I don't have any rock yet and I have a small tank, they will be easier to catch. Eventually I'm gonna trade the dominos for a pair of nemos. Really like the blue....he's very docile at least he is in the tank with the dominos. They beat him up. Poor guy hides in the cave I provided for them till I could get rock. The dominos are goofy. Fun to watch. I have some fake plants in my tank to provide them a place to hide and one will nestle down in the plant and bob his head in and out of the plant like he's playing peek a boo with me lol.

I have seen blue damsels exist in a tank with clowns and there were no issues whatsoever (in case you wanted to hang on to the shy guy).

Thinking about it. I like him and hell stand out from everything else. When I get some blue lighting I bet his colors will pop. The dominos though have got to go. They're mean mean.

Omg lol. Too funny! These little boogers are so mean they nip at my snails shells when they come up onto the glass. Sometimes they even knock the poor little guys down. It's sad. They are pretty but I've heard as they age their white spots will fade and ill be left with solid black mean fish from Hades. I hate the little menaces just because theyre bullies lol.

Update on 20 gallon.... Upgraded light to a dual t5! Wednesday of this past week I started adding coral frags! Hopefully they'll be a decent size when the 55 is ready for them in about 3 months! Been doing 1 to 2 water changes a week depending on nitrates. I don't let them get over 15. Pics of the new frags I got from wuw tomorrow if they open up! Got some zoas and some other frag....not sure what it is exactly but it had pretty colors and was on the 10 buck rack sooooo....... oh and got some rods reef food! Get to start cleaning the 55 up tomorrow after work!

So an update.....since its been forevers.... Tank is still doing good.... I am having a slight hair algae issue but its contained to one rock and not bad.... I have since acquired many Frags and so far have kept everything but my birdsnest alive and growing. My coral list now includes..... Kenya tree, a green acan, two orange montis (smooth and textured kind), eagle eyes, a Ricordia, frogspawn, pinkish favia, a red and green favia, radioactive dragon eyes, whammin watermelons, bam bams, what I've been calling blueberry fields forever because that's what it looks like to me, and my newly acquired sc watermelon boobies frag! Oh and I forgot green star polyps! Here's a couple pics of the tank and my new sc watermelon boobies!

I'm a salty nut!
